Most of us will say..yes, we are miserable.
This is because we feel that we are inadequate, deficient or incomplete. And we try to overcome these deficiencies through worldly pleasures.
However any gain that comes as a result of our efforts in this direction is not absolute because it is associated with loss. The gain obtained is always negated by the time and effort expended, by the responsiblity assumed or by any other thing sacrificed.
For instance when I buy a house or a car, the pleasure and security I gain are negated by the money spent, the debt incurred, the subsequent maintenence, insurance, taxes, etc; all of which take away something from the feeling of adequecy and comfort that I sought before buying these things.
We must remember that an inadequate person remains inadequate even after gaining the desired object.
So an enlightened person is he who recognises that what he really wants is a drastic change in himself and not a situational change.
This realisation brings dispassion towards the pursuits of worldly things and will ultimately lead us to the path of LIBERATION.
Do you agree?
