Suffering

"The world is full of suffering. Birth is suffering, old age is suffering, sickness and death are sufferings.
To meet a man whom one hates is suffering, to be separated from a beloved one is suffering, to be vainly struggling to satisfy one's needs is suffering.
In fact, life that is not free from desire and passion is always involved with distress. This is called the Truth of Suffering.
The cause of human suffering is undoubtedly found in the thirsts of the physical body and in the illusions of worldly passion.
If these thirsts and illusions are traced to their source, they are found to be rooted in the intense desires of physical instincts.
If desire, which lies at the root of all human passion, can be removed, then passion will die out and all human suffering will be ended."

  1. surjit, I can see where your going but my dear friend...the answer you propose is too simplistic..how do you remove desire..desire is not only about love but is the essence of our being as is passion..we would also have to remove hunger and war...hate and love.do you see where I'm going?
    your good friend...maunie

  2. Surjit, I am always awaiting your new post. :-)

There could be confusion about the term passion. If one follows a path of self awareness and detaching from desire, does it imply a life that is pale, without energy and neutral?
    Thank you for this discussion.

  3. Too much pain and I wouldbe wise to soften the nature of my demand or ask why I am striving so hard for something with such a high price tag. Sometimes there is a reason why things aren't working, and I need to search very hard inside to find the truth. When the effective answer is arrived at, usually the behavior - and then the suffering - diminishes...

It's hard to distinguish apathy from wisdom sometimes though if you just give up.

  9. Respected Surjitji,
Namaste :)) What a beautiful post! I am reminded of The Buddha's foremost teaching that DESIRE/expectation IS THE ROOT CAUSE OF SORROW..and its so true that if we nip our expectations in the bud this world would be free from a large part of suffering..i know its difficult to murder desire completely because our life revolves around them but its worth a sincere effort :)
Thank you surjitji for this reminder..you awaken our darkened souls with so much light :))
May God bless you always..My love, hugs and sincere prayers for a very beautiful soul :))

  11. Krishna Ji,
I fully agree with your views.I know it is very difficult to shed desires from our life, but to be aware of its consequences and making our efforts towards achieving the goal is worth it.
Thanks for adding your insights to my post making it more worthwhile.
    God bless.

  12. Do you not love God with a passion? Is it not your desire to draw closer to Him?

I do understand what you are saying, but I fear if we removed passion and desire from our lives, life would be pale by comparison. Whether that's a good thing or bad I don't know.
