Quieting the Mind is a Choice

"If you realized how powerful your thoughts are, you would never hold onto a negative thought. I don't eat junk foods and I don't think junk thoughts."
~~Peace Pilgrim~~
"There are three kinds of people. There are those that are not aware that they are having a mental conversation with themselves in their head all the time. If you ask them "What are you thinking about?" they won't remember what they were thinking about just a couple ofseconds ago.
Then there are those who know they have mental self-talk, but they are unable to control its direction and unable to turn it off.
Finally, a small fraction of the population can turn it off completely. These are the masters. They have managed this feat simply by CHOOSING to. They have chosen to quiet the mind and become aware. Their mind is consistently where their body is...
The only way the mind can be where the body is... is by being quiet and simply observing without commenting or judging. As long as we are operating with the self-talk on automatic, we are bound to repeat the same path, the same choices, the same errors, over and over again. This is because there is nothing new or fresh in our mental shuffle. By allowing our old self-talk programming to run unchecked, 95% of some 50,000 thoughts we have everyday, are repetitive.
People think that their thinking is what helps them, but thinking is like any other tool. The right amount of it at the right time is useful, but too much can be damaging, if not outright destructive at times. We probably need to think about 10% of the time only..no more. Making a point of auditing our thoughts,at intervals, so as to see what precisely we are thinking about, is the best thing we could do for ourselves. ."
On the outside, see the world as it is, without commentary and judgement

  5. Hi Surjit...

I have the sense that the quiet mind is the very realm of existence, creativity, and emergence.

When our minds are still, we are in the state of revelation.

Thank you for this lovely thought!

  7. Hi Surjit,
The mind is like a hyperactive child. Sometimes it's hard to quiet it down. With practice, we are able to pacify it and instill the quietness of man.

The mind is a good student, but an inadequate master.

  13. Love this Surjit!

Its in quieting the mind to the point where you can slip into the space between them where i find the most freedom.

Its The space between the notes that makes the music, and the space between the thoughts were our ticket to freedom lies,

    Love and blessings,

    M

  27. Yet another wonderful share surjit. And, probably the one I was sent here to read.

I am physically tired while travelling out here on the road. I cannot take care of myself physically as well as at home. And, last night I caught myself completely caught up in self doubt, pity, and very negative thoughts.

But, I praise the Lord because I noticed what I was doing and I changed my mood. As you know this is an area I have trouble in. So I was very pleased and grateful that I recognized what was happening and I changed my focus onto more positive things.

    God Bless, Surjit
