Depression

"Depression is now classified as a global disease. In our hectic world it is finding a home in many minds. It can affect our work and our relationships.
It is now more important than ever before to reverse this tide of negative thinking and to adopt a spiritual attitude to life in order to protect us from depression."

Concern should drive us into action, not depression. - Karen Horney

  2. Good Monday afternoon to you, Surjit 1

I find that when I am depressed, God is far away.
When I am happy, God is close...

But then there are times in the midst of depression where God murmurs in my ear, and that awareness he shares with me is the beginning twinges of hope...

  3. You are right,Loving Annie.God is always close to us.It is we who 'ignore' His presence..
Thanks for adding your practical experiences.

  4. Hi Surjit...

Ohhh depression is such a difficult issue.

I find it a complex problem... and for many, not easily remedied.

What I do feel is that the more we move toward health; emotional, spiritual, physical, mental, the more we can find harmony and balance.

    Thanks for this thought Surjit,

    Jen

  5. I agree, we are always depressed and have this negative fault finding mind. This can cause lot of problems in our society. If we stop this rat race after money wanting more and more and be still for one moment, what bliss it would be. People don't understand that being still can prevent lot of problems. If scientists do a research on who are the most happy and healthy people on earth, they will find that poor people leading a simple lifestyle in villages are the happiest and luckiest ones. Great post Surjit.

  6. Surjit, you are right.
Concern should drive us into action, not depression. The latter will only make matters worst. So, learn to relax & detress. A soothing music can do wonders to the mind & body :)

  11. Hi Surjit,

Your post can't be more right! Much as we are so much more advanced in every area of life in the world today, it is a fact that we are not very much happier.

We now have so big variety of entertainment. We can taste food from all over the world without even leaving the country. And look at the technology we are enjoying?!

But why is depression such a common state for everyone?

I would be following the comments to this post in the hope of finding light in this topic that I am very interested.

    Blessings,

  13. Riv Kaz, your are right when you say:
'..it is a fact that we are not very much happier...'
I think we are more after materialistic things than spiritual, have developed more individualistic approach, forgotten to love our fellow human beings etc....
Thanks for sharing your meaningful thoughts.
    God bless you.

  15. Hi Surjit,

    Thanks for this nice post!

Indeed, more people are depressed nowadays - maybe being concern too much about unnecessary things or trying to fulfill a lot of the wants instead of the needs.

IMHO, one should spend more time searching for happiness from within to get out of depression by first re-evaluate the values of life, then set a different focus in life.

    BTW, I like that quote..
"Concern should drive us into action, not depression."

  16. Sam Chan, You have very well prescribed the remedy for depression:
...'one should spend more time searching for happiness from within to get out of depression by first re-evaluate the values of life, then set a different focus in life..'
I fully endorse your thoughts. Thanks for adding your insight to my post.
    Best wishes.

  17. Hi surjit, there are solutions for all the problems..rather than being depress..its better to sit down have a good pray..peace your mind and identify the problem and solution will be there.
    Keep smiling

  18. You have rightly said Anits, that we should first identify our problems and try to find solutions rather than giving way to depression.

  19. Hi Surjit,

I came from a long history of Depression. As a teen and young adult I attempted suicide several times and my depression wrecked havoc on my life in ways that are still impacting me today and will forever. What I learned through my journey was that how I thought was key to everything. Our thoughts are so powerful that the realization of this could knock a person over! You are so right Surjit, it is about attitude and negative thinking! We all have the power to be happy. We all have the power to have wonderful lives and it all starts right here inside our heads! Thank you for this wonderful post! Keep up the great work!

  21. Well I don't know who made the remark about you always being on the same wave length...but, I find you are always on target when I come here...almost as if you read my mind. Concerning today's post..now I do suffer from mental health issues...but, depression is not really one of them. I usually am very happy. But, as to my other problems...many of them are as severe as they are due to extreme trauma in my childhood years. And, my brain waves on a scan do have a different pattern than the norm. So, yes to some degree I agree with you on this...however, please do not discount mental health problems as simply being weak in spirit. Because if that is true then everyone that has heart problems, diabetes, or cancer are also guilty of not being strong enough in spirit. The brain is also an organ just like the liver, heart, and your lungs. Many times I have been made to feel less worthy...as a Christian by clergy because I suffer from mental health problems. But, as I stated the issues I am battling are not really depression. But, I am very well informed in the mental health feild as I have been a patient for years. But, you are very right about the amount of people who are suffering now. I should be the minority and not mixed in with what is quickly becoming almost everyone. God Bless surjit~jackie

  22. Thanks Shinade, for sharing your true life experiences. You are a noble person with basically spiritual bent of mind.If you take whatever has happened in your life as God's Will, your cocern about sufferings in past...:
'due to extreme trauma in my childhood years....' will vanish from your mind.
I could not get your email address from your profile page. Thanks for sharing your point of view.

  23. Oh Surjit...I obviously didn't make myself clear...for that i apologize. I was refering to such things concerning the brain such as mental retardation, schizaphrenia, and things such as this. Where there is actual brain damage. And yes through my faith in God I have put those things in my child hood behind me and I don't deal with depression. I basically was trying to say that I agree with what you are saying about depression. Today people live such stressful lives mostly it seems to me chasing after money and things they can't afford...that they do bring this sad state of being upon themselves...oh my I feel terrible that i did not make myself clear. please forgive me for that. I hope this better explains myself. Now I am the one who feels bad...for not choosing my words better. God Bless you for being so understanding. ~jackie
